1. Listed below are an assortment of different assignments which can be completed to help you with credit recovery. You may choose which assignments you would prefer to complete to gain your missed credits in English.
2. It takes 12 completed points to make up one full credit. For example, If you are missing 5 credits in English, you need to complete 60 points of work to makeup those lost credits.
3. A hard copy of each assignment needs to be handed in to me to be graded and saved so we may keep track of where you stand with recovered credits. I have a folder in the classroom with your name where we will keep all completed work.
4. Each assignment needs to be labeled as credit recovery, along with the title of the assignment, so the correct work can be graded/counted towards recovering your credits.
5. In order to receive full points possible for each individual assignment, you must follow the directions carefully and complete all parts of the given assignment. You must answer questions thoughtfully and thoroughly and show me you have put time and effort into any of the assignments chosen and completed. It is possible to only receive partial points if it is clear you have not completed an assignment fully.
6. At any point you may come to any one of your Core teachers and we can let you know how many credits you are missing for each class and how many make up points you have earned thus far for each subject.

Watch any of the following TedTalks and write a one page writeup on the video. You will receive one point for each TedTalk you watch and respond to. Keep checking back as I will update the list with more videos. Each link will have a summary of the video and potential questions you can answer to help guide your response. Make sure to label each response with the title of the video you watch, so I may keep track of your work. Happy viewing!
Write a short story based on one of the prompts below. Your story should be one page typed or two pages hand written. Be creative and have fun. You may write a story for each prompt or just pick one or two you like, it is up to you.
1. Forbidden Basement You are renting a room in someone’s house as you transition to living in a new city. The owner tells you that basement is absolutely, 100% off limits. You don’t bat an eye at this request, until you start hearing noises from the basement at night. After several week of this, you sneak downstairs...
2. Thanksgiving Burgers Write about the only time you hosted Thanksgiving. Start with the line, "For my first Thanksgiving as host, I bought the biggest turkey they had in the store," and end your story with "And that's why we all ate hamburgers."
3. Caught Your character is caught shoplifting. The shop owner says that she won't call the police in exchange for a personal favor..... (keep your story school appropriate)
4. Secrets Alison knew she shouldn’t read her sister’s diary, but she just couldn’t help herself. She pushed a bobby pin into the lock that kept the book shut and it easily opened with a click. Alison turned to page one…
5. Can You See Me Now? What happened when your main character woke up one morning to find they were invisible?
6. A Day In The "Life" Write a story from the perspective of an inanimate object such as a candy wrapper, laptop, or water bottle. The story should encompass the various things the object sees, how it is being interacted with and of course a personality most suitable to the object.
-Lewis Carroll Found Poem (3-7pts.) Complete the steps provided in full to receive 3 points for credit makeup. To earn another four points, heavily annotate and write a thoughtful paragraph response for three of the poems.
-Grimm (3pts. each. No more than 4 will be accepted) Pick one of the Fairy Tales written by the brother's Grimm. Read the story and become familiar with the detail. Please note that the original stories are very different from their Disney interpretations. Next retell the story from a different perspective. The story can be rewritten in one of two way; 1. Write the story in the perspective of the villain. How would they interpret the events which occurred? 2. Write the story in the voice of the hero. Retell the story as a personal narrative for the protagonist (main character). What are they feeling when everything is happening to them?
Read the graphic novel The Harlem Hellfighters by Max Brooks. It is a fiction novel based on the historical events of the 369th Infantry Regiment in World War I, the only all black regiment in the war. I have one copy of the book in the classroom for borrow on the condition that the student who borrows it is then responsible for its replacement should it be lost. Keep a reading journal for the following pages *1-23 *24-54 *55-79 *80-129 *130-171 *172-223 *224-238 So, you should have 7 entries total with your reaction to each of the sections. What do you think about what happened? Did you like it? Why or why not? Were there words you didn't understand? Tell me what you think. This is a very intense piece of history which you should have a reaction to in some way. Each entry should be one paragraph minimum (5-7 sentences). Once you have completed reading the graphic novel and the 7 reading response entries, write an overall response to the text. Within your response be sure to answer; Why do you think these men who were so badly treated in their own country, be willing to fight for it?
